Second-Annual TASIS Terry Fox Run Raises CHF 5373 for Swiss Cancer Foundation
More than 300 High School students and faculty members participated in TASIS The American School in Switzerland’s second-annual Terry Fox Run on the afternoon of October 10. Responding to Athletic Director Sonny Lim’s challenge to finish as many 500-meter laps as possible in 45 minutes, the TASIS contingent established a new school record by completing 3053 laps—covering a total distance of 1527 kilometers (36.2 marathons). Between pledge collections, T-shirt purchases, and donations, the community also reached its fundraising target of CHF 5373, all of which was donated to the Swiss Cancer Foundation.
Inspiring athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist Terry Fox lost his right leg to cancer in 1977 and three years later set out on a Marathon of Hope across Canada, ultimately logging 5373 kilometers on a prosthetic leg in just 143 days before the the cancer spread and forced him to abandon his goal of running all the way from Newfoundland’s Atlantic shores to British Columbia’s Pacific coast. Although the terrible disease prevented Mr. Fox from completing this unbelievable mission, his legacy has inspired millions of runners in more than 60 countries to participate in Terry Fox Runs the world over—raising more than $650 million in his name.
The TASIS participants began the afternoon by pinning dedication ribbons to a Terry Fox Run Dedication Wall set up on campus and observing a collective moment of silence in recognition of those affected by cancer. They then walked down to the cross country team’s Grotto Course, where parent volunteers were waiting to hand out rubber bands to mark the completion of each runner’s lap.
Most High School advisor groups consist of seven or eight students, and 18 groups raised at least CHF 150 or ran at least 80 laps: those of Mr. Lim (grade 12, raised CHF 758), , Ms. Brigitte Cazebonne (grade 11, raised CHF 430), Dr. Chris Love (grade 12, raised CHF 380 and ran 95 laps), Mr. Peter Locke (grade 12, raised CHF 310 and ran 82 laps), Mr. Mark Chevalier (grade 9, raised CHF 300 and ran 91 laps), Mr. Tom Angelitti (grade 9, raised CHF 278,) Ms. Nilda Lucchini (grade 12, raised CHF 197), Mr. Thomas Joyce (grade 12, raised CHF 177), Mr. Danny Schiff (grade 10, raised CHF 176), Dr. Jill Sawyer-Price (grade 11, raised CHF 156), Ms. Carolyn Heard (grade 12, raised CHF 150), Mr. Keith Isza (grade 9, ran 130 laps), Ms. Charlotte Zanecchia (grade 11, ran 99 laps), Ms. Mara Bernasconi (grade 11, 89 laps), Mr. Paul Diviani (grade 11, 83 laps), Mr. Gil Grimm (grade 12, 82 laps), Ms. Emma Bassett (grade 10, 81 laps), and Mr. Paul Cawthorne (grade 10, 81 laps).
TASIS is honored to have made but a small contribution to the ongoing fight against a disease that claims the lives of more than eight million people each year. “I was pleased to see another great turnout, and I’m happy we were able to focus on the fundraising side of things a bit more this year,” said Mr. Lim, who has worked at TASIS since 2012. “While the fight against cancer can feel like an uphill battle, as a school community we are in a position to raise both awareness and funds, and we will continue to do our best.”
